Ultra-shallow seismic surveying can take place on land as well as at sea. The maximum penetration is typically 25 m beneath the surface of the sediments. Within this depth range, the focus of interest may be purely geotechnical, or it can be geological characteristics in a broad sense. Ultra-shallow seismic surveying requires high- resolution technololgy and, unlike most other geophysical techniques, this has the potential for mapping subsurface structural properties.

At sea, sub-bottom profiling is a key instrument to gain an insight into structural information vital to:

Bottom and sub-bottom installations

Geotechnical investigations

Geological investigatonis

On land, this technology may offer

Better planning of remediation drillings

Better understanding of groundwater flow
